Common plantain goes by a bunch of old names—Cuckoo’s Bread, Ripple Grass, Waybread and it’s been used for centuries. It shows up in Native American history and even in English herbal texts from the early 1600s. These days, plantain (once called Slan-lus, meaning “plant of healing”) is often added to tea blends. Thanks to a natural compound called aucubin—one of the plant’s built‑in defenses—it’s also popular for making infused oils and tinctures that are used on the skin.
